It might be Halloween season, but one thing you don’t need to be afraid of is a visit to the audiologist. Wondering what to expect for your visit? We have plenty of information for you to help arm you with knowledge so you don’t have to worry about anything when you come in for your appointment.
The first step to understanding that an audiology appointment isn’t scary is understanding what an audiologist does. The Academy of Doctors of Audiology explains, “An audiologist is a professional who diagnoses and treats hearing and balance problems. An audiologist has received an Au.D. (Doctorate in Audiology), or a Master’s or Doctoral degree from an accredited university graduate program in audiology. Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage and treat hearing or balance problems for individuals from birth through adulthood.” Wikipedia adds to that definition, “they dispense, manage, and rehabilitate hearing aids and assess candidacy for and map cochlear implants.” However, that isn’t all that we do, audiologists also help counsel families through a new diagnosis of hearing loss and teach coping skills.
As with most medical appointments, plan to arrive a few minutes early so that you can fill out some forms. Our hearing professional will talk to you about your hearing needs and medical history before examining your ear and ear canal. Then we perform the hearing assessment, it includes a series of specialized parameters that help us understand your hearing ability and if you are experiencing hearing loss. If it is determined that you do have hearing loss, we will take a look at the cause and discuss treatment options which are usually hearing aids. If we do recommend hearing aids for you, then we will schedule a separate visit for you to come back and have your customized hearing aids fitted and calibrated for your individual listening needs.
